Product information
Why is it important to fuse your new Lithium Battery?
The battery fuse protects the wiring — not the devices connected to it. When replacing lead-acid batteries with lithium (LiFePO4), a suitably rated primary battery fuse is essential. Its critical role is to protect the system from catastrophic short-circuit events. Unlike lead-acid batteries, LiFePO4 cells have extremely low internal resistance and in a dead-short scenario, the battery can release many thousands of amps almost instantaneously for a split second. Without adequate protection, this can vaporise cables, potentially resulting in fire. This means the fuse protecting your old lead-acid battery is no longer suitable. It will need replacing. You are likely to have a MEGA, MIDI or a BLADE fuse, which are not appropriate for protecting Lithium batteries. MEGA, MIDI or BLADE fuses are ideal for use with Lead-acid batteries and protecting loads from chargers. But they do not have the right blowing characteristics to protect your system from the power of a lithium battery.
LithiumPro Batteries have very powerful and advanced Battery Management Systems (BMS) that are designed to protect against short circuit, reverse polarity and overcurrent scenarios, but this is NO substitute for having a correctly sized mechanical primary battery fuse in a dead short scenario.
The fuse must have a fast-acting element and the appropriate Ampere Interrupt Capacity (AIC) designed to blow quickly and safely open the circuit so the current can no longer flow. High-quality MEGA and MIDI fuses only have a maximum AIC rating of 2000A, which is not high enough to support lithium systems.
For safety and compliance, only use reputable fuse brands such as Blue Sea, Bussmann, Littelfuse, Mersen or Siemens with high AIC capacity ≥6000A. Never use cheap fuse alternatives from marketplaces without datasheets. Original Equipment fuses will have the specification marked on the fuse itself. – High-quality fusing is the most safety-critical component in your whole electrical system.

FUSING LITHIUM BATTERIES:
IMPORTANT:
All lithium batteries must be protected by a correctly rated fuse installed as close to the battery as possible.
Lithium batteries are capable of delivering extremely high short-circuit currents (many thousands of amps). For safety, the fuse used must have a high Ampere Interrupt Capacity rating AIC (breaking capacity) suitable for lithium systems.
LithiumPro Energy advises using MRBF (Marine Rated Battery Fuses) for our drop-in replacement lithium batteries. They offer high interrupt capacity protection, ideal for DC lithium applications, 10,000 A at 14 V DC.
For larger batteries above 300 Ah, we recommend Class-T fuses ONLY, with an AIC rating of ≥20,000 A.WARNING:
Only use original equipment manufactured by a reputable brand. Note, standard automotive fuses such as MEGA, MIDI or BLADE fuses are not suitable for lithium batteries, as they do not provide sufficient interrupt capacity for high fault currents.
These must be purchased with the Lithium battery range if installing yourself to qualify for the warranty.
MRBF (Marine Rated Battery Fuses) from Blue Sea are essential for lithium battery banks, which can deliver extremely high currents in a dead-short scenario due to their low internal resistance. Large lithium battery systems require High Interrupt Capacity (AIC) fuses to safely break circuits carrying thousands of amps without melting or failing to disconnect when required.
Supplied with a Bussmann CBBF fuse which has an interrupt capacity up to 10,000 amps at 14 VDC, ensuring it can safely isolate a fault even in powerful lithium battery systems. These fuses are essential to:
-
Prevent accidental short circuits and catastrophic equipment failure.
-
Comply with safety standards like ABYC and ISO for marine and mobile power systems.
-
Protect wiring, inverters, DC-DC chargers, and other expensive system components from overcurrent damage.
In short, a genuine MRBF fuse is not just a recommendation — it’s a safety-critical component in any lithium battery installation.
The DIN Kit is ideal for Drop-in-Replacement Batteries
Kit includes:
1x Marine Rate Battery fuse holder
1x Bussmann fuse
1x Positive battery clamp with M10 stud
